Spyderco Kiwi Slipjoint
The German is under review der englischen Version.
Sometimes it has to be a Kiwi. Kiwi is not only a delicious fruit, and the name of a bird, but it is a really great little knife made by Spyderco.
The original Kiwi series was a series of high-class knives, made in Japan. Like the Kopa I reviewed earlier, the Kiwi was made with different handle materials, and designed to be a gentleman EDC and collectors knife.
It is a shame, but the wonderful Kiwi was discontinued in 2009. One year later, an all new Kiwi was introduced. While the original Kiwi was quite expensive, made of VG10 steel, had a backlock and was made in Japan, the 2010 Kiwi is a chinese-made slipjoint made of 8Cr13MoV steel.
The all new Kiwi is a bargain, it costs under 20 - dollars, but still is a great and high value knife. While it is inexpensive, it looks and feels like a much more expensive knife.
The blade is made to perform well on EDC duty, normal tasks are not the slightest of a problem. The spring of the slipjoint is strong, so the knife is not easy to open one handed, but it feels safe and sturdy.
If you are looking for an inexpensive folder gentleman, the Kiwi might be the right choice.
German version:
Kiwis are good. Not only the fruit or the bird, but the knife from Spyderco. The Kiwi is a brother of Kopa, and as such a collectible knife. Each year, appeared New Kiwis always with different handle materials as collectibles and pick-EDC.
all had in common the basic structure: Kiwis were quite expensive, had a VG10 blade, were from Japan and had backlock.
2009, the Kiwi disappeared from the portfolio to return to in 2010 changed a lot again.
The 2010 Kiwi has a blade made 8Cr13MoV is from China and a Slipjoint. As a (currently) the only options are a steel handle and a bone handle.
The new Kiwi is a great value knife, it is in the 20 - € area. For the price it is a very high quality EDC, it feels more expensive and looks classy. The Kiwi is an EDC in the best sense, the Wharncliffe blade is very sharp and for all everyday tasks well suited, even the steak in the restaurant is not a problem. The blade is short, but sufficiently sized for most purposes.
With the tight spring, the kiwi is not open-handed with no problems, but it is very safe, despite the absence of closure. Who
a cheap suit and business fit for Folder investigated for little money should look at the Kiwi closer look.
